When I first wrote Séance: Echoes from the Other Side, I knew it was going to be different… one of a kind. This new revision takes the groundbreaking original and pushes it even further; to the absolute EDGE!
The piece was originally performed by the Pamplonesa Band in Pamplona, Spain for a special Halloween concert event — which made it the perfect setting for something this theatrical and immersive. From the very beginning, it was designed to feel like more than just a concert work. It’s an experience.
At its core, Séance is about that uneasy moment when you feel like something is in the room… even if you can’t explain it. The music unfolds like a ritual. It starts subtly — whispers in the winds, fragile textures, strange harmonies that don’t quite settle. Then it grows. The energy builds. The percussion enters in unique, almost theatrical ways, not just keeping time but helping create the atmosphere itself. It’s not background color — it’s part of the storytelling.
One of the most ambitious elements is the optional narration. Directors can choose to include a spoken text that heightens the experience, turning the performance into a one of a kind dramatic event. It feels like the audience is part of the séance itself — listening as the veil thins and something begins to stir.
Throughout the piece, there are sudden shifts — moments of tension, bursts of intensity, and uneasy silences. I wanted performers to feel like they’re inside something unpredictable. The percussion integration plays a huge role here, adding texture and surprise in ways that keep everyone on edge.
And then, just as everything reaches its peak, it disappears. The sound fades into a chilling stillness. No big heroic ending. Just quiet. Charged air. The sense that whatever was summoned has slipped back into the dark.
This revision sharpens those contrasts and clarifies the pacing so the emotional arc feels even more intentional. Séance: Echoes from the Other Side is ambitious, yes — but more than that, it’s an experience. For bands ready to step into something dramatic and immersive, this piece doesn’t just ask them to play notes. It asks them to tell a story!
