Time Marches On is a piece for Concert Band that came from my fascination with both the power and the quiet mystery of time. It’s something we all live with every day, yet it never slows down or waits—and I wanted the music to reflect that unrelenting, forward motion while still capturing a sense of wonder.
The piece begins with a steady, driving pulse that never fully lets go, even as the texture shifts and evolves. There are moments where the music seems to stretch and hover, as if time itself is pausing, before continuing its inevitable push forward. Throughout, you’ll hear subtle references to the Westminster chimes, adding a familiar thread that ties into the idea of timekeeping and tradition.
As the work builds, it grows into a full, resonant climax—an emotional high point that feels earned through the gradual unfolding of the music. But even at its peak, the sense of motion never disappears. In the final moments, the ticking returns, followed by twelve measured chime strikes. One by one, the ensemble fades away, leaving a quiet reminder that time continues on, whether we’re ready or not.
Beyond its musical narrative, Time Marches On is also designed to be a meaningful performance opportunity. It offers space for expressive playing and thoughtful phrasing, while challenging ensembles to focus on balance and blend. Whether performed by developing groups or more advanced ensembles, the piece invites musicians to engage deeply with both the technical and emotional elements of the music. Check it out HERE Today!
